A couple of weeks ago my wife hands me a magazine that her co-worker gave her so I can read an article about bikes. The magazine is Spirit Magazine and the article was about Joe Breeze. I read the article and I told my wife that Breezer bikes are very nice bikes.

Joe Breeze was at the Bicycle Film Festival on Saturday as well. Although I didn’t meet him, it was cool to see him in person.

Being a bike addict, I subscribe to CraigsList’s Bikes for sale RSS feed. Alas, a Breezer pops up for $200 bucks. The details were sketchy so I emailed the seller a few questions like the model, year and the size. Well, it happens to be a 17″ 2006 Breezer Villager. PERFECT!!! I contacted the seller and I headed over to her house to pick it up right after work.

Coincidence???? I think not….

  I love my Breezer Uptown 8. It is connected to my xtracycle and it is the most comfortable hauling bike I’ve owned. I actually sold my truck to buy the combo (along with a Macbook). The only problem I have is that I can’t seem to figure out how to take off the rear tire without messing up the nexus 8 cable connection. One of these days I will figure it out. Here’s apic of it hauling my rush hour.

  Steve, I don’t know if the 8 speed Nexus cable routing is the same as the 7 speed, but it seems pretty simple to detach the cable…shift to 4th gear(the really crucial step), pull the housing down sharply to release it from the cassette joint pulley (the black cable hanger under the hub)…and pull the leaded end out of slot. Voila — cable detached!
  
  If your hub has roller brakes, you’re on your own…I’ve only seen pictures of that one!!!

  I’d recommend some Slime and thorn resistant tubes to minimize the need of removing your back wheel.

  I have the U frame (step-through) Uptown 8. I paid more for this bike than my first car, but I love it and ride it all the time. I can ride it in a skirt, too. I have 4 other bikes that I barely ride since I bought my Breezer last year.

  Thanks for the tips for dealing with the Nexus hub. I don’t have roller brakes and I haven’t been using slime. When I get a repair stand, I do some practicing with the hub. Having the xtracycle, I think, makes the operation a bit more difficult because of the free loaders and the ability to maneuver them.

  I’m sure — maneuvering around all that extra hardware adds to the difficulty. You may want to check Shimano’s website for tech manuals…they have a great selection of PDF files that cover their products. In fact, here is a link to the 8-speed Nexus diagram and service instructions:

  As for repair stands, I went 20+ years without one, but when I finally found a deal on one, it revolutionized my repairs and maintenance…best money I ever spent (short of the engagement ring I bought for my wife)!

  You lucky lucky lucky man! That’s a great bike – it was out of my price range when I was first shopping for bikes (over $1200.00 CDN ). I tried one out and was amazed at the smooth easy shifting. You lucky luck LUCKY man! I hope you enjoy it!
