I bought one of these for $25. It’s not as long as some other racks but works excellent for my purposes. I commute with a smaller backpack and a lunchbag. Both attach easilty with a bungie cord. The rack even comes with a little bracket to relocate your reflector. Very light and plenty of places to bungie down your gear.
I believe it has a weight limit of 25 pounds or so but it’s pretty dang sturday. It’s probably more for someone who has a relatively small amount of gear but doesn’t want to wear a backpack.
I tried a beam rack made by Topeak, but no matter how I shimmed it or how tightly I tightened the QR, it rotated. If one’s bike can accomodate a standard rack, that’s the way to go. Otherwise, a big saddlebag like a Carradice works great, especially with a Brooks saddle. If not, there are adapters.
