I just got this new job, its about 5 miles away from home and today was my first day riding my bike to the office. After I got here I put my bike away and went to the rest room to wash up and change. While I was soaping up my face, head and arms, some dude that was taking a dump comes out of the stall and while he’s washing his hands he gives me this mean look…
I figured since he’s never seen me before and wondered why I was taking a bath in the sink. So he kept looking at me funny, until I finally said, “Good Morning!” That broke his scowl for a few seconds but he still kept looking at me as if I was some homeless guy that was eating out of the trash. As I finished washing and got changed, I started to smile and said to myself, “Look all you want sucker, I didn’t’ waste any gas riding my bike to work!”
I’m curious to see what other looks I’ll get once I bust out of here at 5pm since I’ll be carrying my bike on my shoulder as I go down the stairs….heck I should just ride it down!

I had a woman in a big honkin’ SUV yell “Get a job!” at me on my way in to town today! Granted, I was wearing a T-shirt and shorts (along with helmet and gloves) instead of cycling-specific clothing, but still…
Wow I haven’t had that yet. But I’d love for some douche yell something at me…I know its not the best idea but I like to confront people while I’m on my bike.
I’ve been yelled ‘Get a car’! But never Get a job!!! That’s a new one…
Uuummm babe. U were dressed as you were washing ur face weren’t you? Some people don’t look kindly on naked men in the restroom washing up….just thought i’d check. lol.
At least you weren’t soaping up “your boys” in the sink…THAT would have gotten you some very strange looks!!!
Yeah…I was wearing my birthday suit!
jk, ofcourse I was dressed!
Ha…once I rode my bike to Fashion Island in Newport to go to the Apple store…you’d think I just walked off a spaceship with some of the looks i got…
And just yesterday some of our readers didn’t believe that we’re perceived as a “weird subculture”…stories like this prove that we’ve got LOTS of hearts and minds to win over, and the road ahead is treacherous!
That’s what I love about living in New York. Lots of people get around on bikes. David Byrne is bike commuter!
I saw that about David Byrne being a bike commuter…as the years go by, that man gets cooler and cooler!!!
Fortunate enough to work on an Air Force base. There is a gym I can ride to for shower. Fitness is part of the culture on base, so I don’t get a lot of looks or comments. There are a good number of cyclists here.
Not so many commuters, however. And anyone familiar with the military knows that bases (or posts) are not usually situated in the best parts of town, which makes the last leg of my commute in (or first leg out) rather interesting.
Guess I haven’t had many dirty looks, I suppose being 6’5″ and weiging about 1/8 of a ton makes people think twice about throwing dirty looks my way. Drivers also give me plenty of room on the road when I ride, I think it is because they are afraid I’d pop their airbag if they hit me…..
Hey RL…isn’t this like your 3rd job in the last year??
I Love riding my MTB down a flight of stairs. Not sure I would take something with skinny tires though.
HAHA! I’d say that’s the biggest downside to changing in a bathroom stall…hearing the guy taking care of business next to you.
I guess it’s motivation to get changed and get out quickly!
CornFed,
No this is my second job of the year. But the last one was just a filler. This one I’m sticking with, I’m learning how to do Real Estate Investing…apartment buildings and condo complexes. I’m out of that IT stuff….
Hah! I love it when someone yells “Get a car!” at me- they are generally driving some Bondo-ed wreck from 1984. I yell back “I have a car, and it’s alot better that that POS you’re driving!” Then I smile and ring my little bell and go along my way;->
If anyone yells at me while I’m on my bike it’s usually a car load of gay guys trying to hit on me…I hate being sexy!
RL – Wow, real estate development is a tough gig right now…Good Luck to you! My wife used to be in IT…she doesn’t miss it either…
The difference with what we’re doing and traditional RE is that we’re focusing on residential income properties. But thanks!
