Last week I was really getting sick of the daily grind. Sometimes you just have to say “screw it!”. So I took a day off…what the hell. Lucky for me my wife lives close enough to bike so I hopped on the old 925 singlespeed and headed to downtown Fullerton to meet her at an awesome little vegetarian cafe called Sydney’s. It’s was about a 5 mile ride and along my normal work route. Perfect!

The wife had to stay a little later in the office so I sat by my lonesome sitting and listening to the trees rustle in the wind. There’s a cigar shop a couple of doors down and I got to smell that sweet, pungent pipe smoke. I’ve never smoked a pipe but always love smelling it. Yum! After my wife shows up we go inside and had some delicious food and great brews(just me, the wife was working). If you’re in So Cal and you haven’t had tried Brewbakers beers check ‘em out. Their Red Ale is stellar.

Man, sometimes I just get so caught up in the rat race I find myself hurrying even on days off and almost just rode on home. But as we’re leaving I figure, hey, why can’t I walk my wife back to the office? So I agreed with myself and accompanied her to work. While she’s walking back and I’m riding next to her my wife is telling me “jump over that!” or “Aww common, hop that curb!”. Needless to say that and the two beers I had for lunch had me in a fine mood for the trek home.

That was until I started climbing the hill on my singlespeed. Now I know why I don’t drink before rides. Not that I was hammered, but whoa boy will that kill your stamina! Moral of the story, don’t brink deers before you ride!
Nah, Actually it just helped me notice how damn important it is to take some time to relax and forget about everything now and then. Sure it’s a little work and you might be playing catch up the next day at your job but the stress relief is absolutely worth it. So go ahead, take that day off from work and tell your boss I said it’s okay!

Amen Lance! It’s so easy to lose sight of what is important in life by getting caught up with work and all that “grown-up” stuff. Sometimes you just gotta listen to the trees.

I understand the need to get away, but you have to be careful…
Playing hooky andRunning a blog — or a facebook page, like this example, can get you busted…..

Thanks Tim, I had the day approved off by my boss. Hooky just makes for a better title.

Playing hooky is one of adulthood’s greatest pastimes…and being a government employee makes it SO EASY (heh heh). Why, at my old job I would just tell trusted co-workers “hey, I’m gonna be ’sick’ tomorrow”, and they’d take care of telling the boss I called in. That was OK because the boss called in ’sick’ at least two days a week…ah, your taxpayer dollars hard at work!
