A great commercially available bike tire chain setup is made by Slipnot Traction Systems. I'm an idiot when it comes to making these things like this myself, and chains are a godsend for controlling roll.

I made a pair about 15 years ago but they are held on the wheel entirely by the tire's air pressure. No need for the zip ties crossing over the rim - best part is that is they work even if you don't have disc brakes. I used a heavier gauge, mashed-link chain - maybe it's overkill but it will hold up a long time because the links are welded. They work great for rear wheel traction but the front it still a little unstable, especially in the turns. I don't know if that can ever be overcome completely.

Prior to installing the tire chains, the back tire always spun when I started pedaling. While turning, I had to go slow enough to ensure the front tire didn’t slip from under me. The tire chains helped quite a bit. It felt like the tires grabbed the road a bit more than not having them in place. I didn’t experience any tire damage at all. Having tire chains this winter for less than $14 isn’t a bad deal at all. Post a comment if you decide to try it.

I like that in place of the studs but how did they effect handling and did they do any damage to the tires?
