What’s a Douche Bag you ask? Is it a feminine hygiene product?

Well yes and no. In this application, we’re using it to describe…”somebody who you think is a complete retard and doesn’t know anything about what they’re talking about.” (thanks to the Urban Dictionary).

In my commuting adventures, I’ve dealt with so many douche bags on the road. Some threaten, some act like they’re going to get out of a car, but most of the time they’re all talk. Plus they think they are super tough in their car.

One of my favorite douche bags was this fella right here.

This guy cuts me off, and when I let him know what he did…I get that! I mean c’mon!

I’m sure each and one of you has had some sort of run in with a douche bag in your days. I’m curious to know who’s story will blow us away.

Coincidence or what.

This morning on my commute in to work I got passed by a car on small roundabout; (do you have them in the States?) Look here for an explanation:

Not the safest place to pass, especially with the fact that 30 yards past it there are temporary traffic lights in place for road works that have been there for the last 5 months. He passes me and then promptly brakes HARD to stop for the red light and veers left, (your right!), right in front of me. Leaving me no escape route and no braking distance. I went straight into the back of him.

I’m now lying on the pavement with only a bruised ego, when he steps out of the car, shouting and swearing abuse at me for hitting him. He then spits at me, gets back in his car and drives away.

The lady in the car behind me saw everything, and calls the police. She asked if I was OK, (I’m fine) sits me in the back of her car, gives me her business card and gives the police a statement when they arrive. Leaving the scene of an accident is SO illegal here in the UK.

I’ve just heard from the police that the guy has been arrested and charged with reckless driving. It was all caught on CCTV camera. I didn’t even know there was a camera.

Thumbs up for Big Brother!!!!

Plus he got a big scratch in his car from my brake lever!!!!

I have so many lilttle event of an SUV coming inches from me I can’t re-call them, for me the biggest thing that has happened lately, 1 I got my cargo trailer run over be a Caddy that turned into the bike lane, and a construction F450 came close enough to me to head-butt it, Entering a construction zone!

The guy in the photo is probably an angry individual. He’s stuck driving an old Suburban (or crew-cab pickup) that gets 11mpg and he’s buying fuel at over $100 per week. It may not register consciously, but you and your $0 per week wimpy “vehicle” not making the same financial sacrifice no doubt gall him that much more. You don’t pay taxes, you’re in his way, you’re small and you’re weak.

Nonetheless, he’s a douche bag. Rejoice that you are not him.

Oh, and I particularly fear trailers (that always seem to be wider than the vehicle pulling them) and dually pick-ups (also wider in the rear.) Just when you thought the danger was over as the front of the vehicle passes closely…

Once when riding home from work in Boston somwhwere in Cambridge I was riding between the row of parked cars on my right and the traffic jam on my left. I guy comes from a side street on the right stops at the intersection looks
right at me coming at him from about 25 feet away and proceeds to put his cars nose out into the small space between two cars in the jam to my left, and stops dead. Blocking my path. I swiftly braked to a halt next to his drivers side door. I was staring right down at him sitting in his seat. He knew I was there but avoided eye contact by staring in the direction he wanted to go while not moving at all since he was attempting to nose into a traffic jam. I suppose in retrospect I could have just walked around to the other side behind the car and gone on my way but I was younger and more testy. In those days I wore black leather steel toe “logger” boots which looked allot like combat boots but were great for winter riding in my urban bikers war zone. I got off my bike and hefted it up on my shoulder, stepped up onto his hood and marched over to the other side of the car leaving big Vibram sole footprints in the dust on his hood, jumped down, got back on my bike and rode off. Not one of my best moments but satisfying to think about to this day.

Bravo, Andrew! I also read an account like this (was it yours?) over on BSNYC the other day. It’s militant, to be sure, but non-damaging and really got the message across. Wow!!!

I had a fellow pass by me so close that his passenger-side rear-view mirror clipped the end of my handlebars. No confrontation, though – he just drove off.

A friend of mine was riding home on the side of the road when a pickup truck with attached lawn-care trailer passed him. The truck cleared him but something sharp sticking out of the (wider) trailer severed the muscles in his upper arm and cut him all the way to the bone — 3 corrective surgeries later, he was able to use his left arm again. Trailers terrify me!

I should add that the truck never even slowed down…they had no idea they struck my buddy, and he didn’t crash after the contact, so everything probably looked ok to the driver (if he was paying attention).
