Dude, where’s the bike shop?

I’ve come back from my yearly trip to New Mexico/Texas. I visited Las Cruces, White Sands, Ruidoso, Cloudcroft, El Paso and Carlsbad.

Cloudcroft, NM

Most of my stay was in Carlsbad, where my in-laws reside. So what is my Xmas get away have to do with cycling? Well, I wanted to visit Carlsbad’s Bike shops and get some info on the cycling scene there. Turns out, the LBS is basically your Super Wally World store. When I asked what happened to the real bike shop, I was told that the owner was sick and he basically shut down the place.

This sucks because Carlsbad is home to a few Mountain Bike Trails and a river trail and since it’s a small town, bike commuting/utility is very possible. So if you are planning to go Carlsbad and plan to take your bike, make sure you take some tools, spare parts and that you are handy with a wrench.

On a lighter note, I met Jeff Rossini, our Phoenix writer/tester. We stopped to get food in Phoenix and Jeff was kind to meet us there. Unfortunately we were running behind and we didn’t chat as much as we wanted to. All I can say is that Jeff is very cool and I’m glad he is part of the BikeCommuters.com crew.

Seems like wally mart has that effect on a lot of local businesses whenever they move into an area.

Moises, where’d you get that sweet grey “Gas Sucks” t-shirt? I’ve only ever seen red ones. You really ARE the MAN, aren’t you?

Very cool that you got to meet Jeff — he’s a handsome devil and a great addition to our happy family!

Yeah, it was a little chilly, but I don’t like driving with a sweater on.

The Special Edition T-shirt was given to me by Vince Calvillo at Interbike.
