No, it’s not a picture of some strange Double-Dutch handle bar bike I’m working on. No it’s not an air foil to neutralize the drag caused by an 8-pack of T.P. It’s my fender.

I did some groceries this morning and when I was putting everything back on the rack I noticed the bolt that attaches the rack to the eyelet in the dropout had dropped out. What to do?! Fortunately, I had my bag of tools. I thought I had a spare bolt but no luck. My only choice, was to use one of the bolts that attaches the fenders to the frame for the rack.
So off the fenders went.
A woman was walking her dog and watched me for a while as I brought out my tool bag and started disassembling the fender. “You have to take that off to put your bags on?,” she asked. I tried to explain, but god bless her pointy little head, she couldn’t understand.
I popped the fenders off, used the bolt for the rack and slipped everything under my cargo net (one of the greatest bike commuter accessories ever).

Just a reminder, always check those pesky rack bolts that always seem to disappear when you need them most and bring a bag of tools with you too.

that’s a bummer. Would the water bottle mount bolts work?

A small bundle of assorted zip ties (even 1 or 2) has saved the day for me. Of course, some blue Lock-Tite or safety wire is a way to go…

My rear are ziptied on as I can’ t get the bolts to stay in. Zipties, wire and duct tape are life savers.

Saturday I didn’t have a fender fall off, rather a fully loaded pannier, the screw that holds the retention spring on, was/came loose, and thanks to a speed bump, my panniers now smell like banana mush.

on my bike, the threading for water bottles and fender/rack eyelets are different…

I don’t bother trying to explain anything to the pointyheads, I just grumble something about needing to fix something and they eventually wander away, or back away slowly, depending on how I said it.

I was travelling light one day and got a flat. I had nearly nothing to pry off my super tight tire beads, but I found a medium sized wire ziptie, and it did the trick. amen to zip ties. I have used them to hold (unladen) bike rack in place also to get home. zipties are magic on a bike.
