I should add that although I never met Sheldon, we corresponded via email periodically. No matter how oddball a technical question I had about some whacked-out, esoteric vintage bit, Cap’n Bike was always there with a friendly reply and a guiding hand. He was a good man.

Wow, that’s really sad. I to had never met him, nor have we ever emailed. But it was his site that got me into the whole fixed gear thing. Heck I was just on it today checking out gear ratios for my SS.

    He will be missed.

also very glad to have found out about Sheldon’s amazing resource, and sad to hear that he’s passed on

also glad to see that his site survives him, and hope that plans have been made to keep it operational in perpetuity

I’d say that as far as bike information in the Internet age goes, Mr Brown was the most important figure around. He’s probably advised 99% of modern bike nerds directly or indirectly. How sad.

    Man that bites. :(

I loved that guy like he was my own uncle. He has helped me through so much from changing my first flat on my own to overhauling my bottom bracket.

I send my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I remember calling the shop once after going back and forth in an email discussion. I had a problem with something, and I said, “I did not buy this at your shop but…”

He replied quickly with, “That was your first mistake.” Then, he helped me fix my bike.

He really was a good guy.

He was a unique and generous individual. He had good ideas, sensible ideas, and will definitely be missed.

RIP, Sheldon Brown. Only ever exchanged one email with him, but he knew the answer immediately. I, too, am glad his legacy will live on through the website.

I like to think that Sheldon, no longer constrained by the bounds of his illness, is riding unfettered along the great veloway in the sky.

Wow, I used his site so often and never knew that guy with the crazy beer and glasses was Sheldon Brown. Very sorry to hear of his passing.

His site was always informative and helpful. I’ll always be thankful for all the cycyling knowledge he spread.
