Shivers long underwear: First Impression

February 20th, 2008 by Lance · 8 Comments

Shivers sent us a pair of their blue long underwear to try out. I was expecting a pair of ugly wool leggings, but not so. These things feel more like women’s nylons. They’re obviously designed to be more technical than your everyday long underwear.

I honestly felt a little silly slipping these on. I had to use the same method I watch my wife using everyday. Bunch ‘em up…slide em on. Only, when I got them all the way on the waist line came up to the bottom of my pecs. Shivers apparently didn’t want any of the taller folk left out. No biggie. Even when the waist was rolled down it was still thin enough to put a pair of shorts over comfortably.

Just like nylons you can see your skin through them if you stretch any part of your legs. Ya, you probably wouldn’t want to wear these by themselves. Shivers claims they can be used multiple applications from hiking and camping to motorcycling or snowboarding. I’ll obviously be trying these out as commuter undies.

As I walked out the door for a mountain biking ride, last weekend, I really felt the cold bite through, but after I rode a bit they felt surprisingly toasty. Like the attached booties too…just like my old Winnie the Pooh full body PJs. Check back in for the full test.

I don’t mean to be snarky, but are we talking about testing long-johns in SoCal?

Hey, they tried to get me to test them for the site first…and I live in central Florida!!! We nominated Lance because he goes into the mountains for bike rides, and might run across some chilliness up there.

Lance, how is it that you know so much about the way women’s nylons feel? ;)

Suppose you have a point Smudge. Still, I’m pretty slim and get cold VERY easily. Although it’s not below freezing here, it does get to the low 40s so I’ve got a little cold to work with(people in colder climates please don’t laugh) :)

I’d like to test those out here in the bitter Chicago cold we’ve been having lately. We’re excited that it’s going to be over 30 degrees this weekend. Now that’s laughable. Hopefully the warmer weather will arrive soon — send some our way, Lance! ;-)

I went to Chicago in early January a year back. Boy is that a whole new level of cold!

I rode with the Shivers this morning in 45 degrees. They’re pretty amazing considering how thin they are.

$17.99 isn’t too bad either. I’d been using leg warmers before these and I like these much better. Lighter, more breathable, and ultimately warmer. When you first put them on they just feel like women’s nylons(i’m guessing :) ) but they really do trap in your body heat. Functions much like a wetsuit does with water.

For a real world test, send those things to me here in Littleton/Denver Colorado. I’ll test them really well until the weather turns nice. Which should be about mid/late April before we can stop wearing tights on the ride into work. We’ve been having a heatwave the last week with morning temps in the 20’s. Heaven!
