Cargo Bike Update

February 25th, 2008 by Russ Roca · 9 Comments

A few readers might know that I’m having a cargo bike built by Bilenky in the works. I just got an email from Stephen today and we’re fine tuning the colors for the paint (it should go to paint this week!). Anyway, he sent me a quick snap of the frame in all its naked metal glory.

It still has a ways from being done but it’s fun to see the process. Below is what I sketched out and sent to them as far as a rough idea for the paint. I can hardly wait for it to arrive!

    Orange, of course.

I didn’t know there were any other colors :) Just “orange” and “not-orange”.

I like the mockup of the sign…it’s a very throwback “porteur” lettering style…

Hugger Orange — for the hotrod in you!

Yeah…the sign and the lettering on the bike will be hand-painted….I wanted a very old-school look to it…makes it feel more in line with what I do, which is very personable and unique

Looks fantastic. That’s going to be a great machine.

I like the sign too, but I’d be worried that you’re making yourself a target for theft. A guy on an expensive custom bike, announcing he carries photography gear? That seems like it’s asking for trouble.

Then again, if you lock it well and never leave your photography gear on the bike, you should be fine — so long as you don’t venture into sketchy neighborhoods.

I’m not trying to be a naysayer, I really think it’s going to be a great bike. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Nice. They are my (very) local builder. I should pedal over there and check out your bike and comission one of my own. I’ve been threatening to have them build me a bike for a few years now…

fixedgear…yeah tell them I say hi!

I wanted so bad to go to NAHBs this year to not only check out some amazing bikemanship but to talk to the Bilenky folks….

I think its always really cool when you can interact with the actual people building your stuff. It’s nice to know its made by people that really know their craft and have pride in the product.
