A few weeks ago NBC released the new Knight Rider movie…and it was AWESOME! I don’t care what people say, the movie was great. I’m hoping they’ll continue the saga and make it into a regular series.

Anyway, during one of the scenes, KITT tells Mike Tracer, estranged son of Michael Knight, that he needed to refuel. Mike Tracer was surprised that a high tech car like KITT even needed gas and commented about him not being powered by Hydrogen. Well KITT goes into an explanation how he’s got all these fancy gadgets where he reuses some of his spent energy into fuel for the car. But KITT still needs fuel, the good side was that he is able to get over 100MPG.

Not bad for a super car that talks!

It’s really too bad that there really aren’t cars available with this kind of mileage. I’ve read articles about Priuses that can get that kind of mileage or some BIO-Diesel car that gets about the same. But when will car manufacturers listen to Hollywood and build a Mustang GT that gets 100mpg!?!

Let me ask you this question…..If there were cars that got 100mpg and was super affordable, would you give up riding your bike and get in the car?

  I would never give up bike commuting. My commute is my daily exersize and keeps me out of the gym. I would also miss the sights and smells which you miss when driving a car. The one thing I do enjoy missing is sitting in a car during rush hour.

  Great question. I believe I would not give up riding. I find myself talking with my wife about bikes and riding and bike parts, etc… This tells me that bike riding has become part of my life. The primary reason I ride is for excersise. The second being fuel.
  
  If I give up riding, I will gain the 15 lbs I lost and not feeling as great as I feel now.
  
  Besides, I am sure the mechanics, parts manufactures, etc…will charge higher prices for repairs to get the money you are saving on gas to pay for maintenance.

  I’d keep riding the bike. For me, it’s still more enjoyable to be outside and it keeps me healthy and active. Also, zero emissions is still better than less emissions which is better than what we have to deal with now.
  
  +1 to what was said above about repairs….As cars become more complicated, the cost to repair them will no doubt get more expensive and knowledge more specialized.
  
  The bike for me is practical beauty. It’s so efficient and transparent in its operations and it’s such a democratic mode of transportation. Anyone can get access to some form of bicycle and instantly be more mobile (granted, not everyone is going to be riding a Serrota or Vanilla).
  
  If or when the 100mpg car does come around, you’ll still see me on the streets pedaling away.

  I rode up to the grocery store and polling place today. It is about 30 degrees and raining. It is only about a mile from house, so no big deal. I have mentioned this more than I should, but nature is awesome. I can either look at the rain from my auto, or ride in it. I get this odd pleasure that is hard to explain when I am in the weather. Snow, ice, rain and wind are not something to fear. It is amazing to be a part of it.

  No way…I love riding my bike, and I’ve driven enough in my lifetime (well over 500000 miles) that I try to avoid being in a car whenever I can!!!

  Put down the crack pipe, this isn’t car & driver.
  I know for fact I wouldn’t start driving because my wife’s 50cc scooter gets 110 mpg and I hardly ever use it.
  Besides, new technology is expensive, breaks easily and costs a lot to repair. My idea of technology is eventually getting that Nexus8 rear wheel built for my commuter so I can run a single ring and a chain guard. Ahh….grease-free pants.

  Nope…I just sold my car, not because of the milage, because I just don’t need one right now. Even if it got 100+mpg, I still wouldn’t need one…

  That vehicle already exists: http://www.afstrinity.com/ I don’t know how affordable it will be once it gets into production, but it’s proven technology, extremely low maintenance, and practical from every point of view. I would recommend something like this for anyone who really needs such a vehicle, but no, I don’t want to drive it every day. Maybe once or three times a year, but it’s not worth buying one for that. I like using my own power. It feels better. Bikes rule.

  The more I think about it, I don’t think I’d even get a car if it got 200 miles per gallon. There are other things you pay for in addition to gas and one of those things, in Los Angeles, is TIME.
  
  I use to commute from the LBC to West LA….all of 30+ miles and on some days the trip would take me 2 hours to go one way. Think about it, 4 hours of sitting in a metal box a day. That’s 20 hours a week on your ass doing nothing but getting old and never getting that time back. At least on public transit you can get some reading, work or sleep in.
  
  Or take my neighborhood, if your car isn’t parked by 6pm you’re going to spend a minimum of 15 to 30 minutes driving around the block waiting for someone to leave so you can park. All of these things wouldn’t be helped much with a 200mpg car. Sure you’d save more gas/money but you’ll never get that time back.

  I wouldn’t give up riding my bike, but if I could get 100mpg while tearing the asphalt up with 400+ horsepower I think I’d be doing some recreational driving and finding the nearest abandoned air strip to play on.

  No. I don’t ride my bike because gas is too expensive. I ride because it’s more fun and gets me to work faster. Creeping along in rush hour traffic in a car like KITT, watching all the bikes pass me, would be really annoying.

  I would still bike commute, for all the reasons listed above. But my household still has a car, and in general I would say the more fuel-efficient that one car can be, the better. It’s not an either/or for me.

  100 mpg cars are still giant polluters, unless they start making them out of recycled steel and plastic, etc. Aaa, but even then, they would have nothing on a well-maintained bike:)

  100MPG is no reason to give up the bike commute but might compel me to replace the 12 y.o. beater I use when I want to go out of town (all my relatives are minimum 300 miles away, many over 500).

  KITT did not Turbo Boost over any cars in the movie. How about a bicycle with the same ability. It can be called BIKK.

  If I need a car, I’d prefer one that got 100 MPG, but since I’ve already got a vehicle that 1) is already the most efficient means of transportation, 2) gets me all the exercise I need, 3) gets me outdoors on days I normally wouldn’t go outside, and 4) helps reduce Atlanta’s traffic congestion, the car wouldn’t replace my bicycle.
  
  A 100 MPG car would not get rid of my carsickness (I’m so sick of cars.)

  Someone should make a bike version of KITT in black, with a red handbar/stem called something like “The 1000 MPG KITT.”
  I wonder how to make it talk, though.
  Or make it patch it’s own flats and jump over rim-killing potholes…

  I own a 100mpg Plug-in Hybrid. I use Clean Domestic Wind Energy to reduce the amount of Dirty Foreign Oil I need to buy. It has voice activated navigation-climate-and stereo. She talks to me! However, now I have someone else telling me “Turn Here!”
