I would support my local shop if they would let me test ride their bikes!

I believe that IBS are a good alternative to those who have crappy shops around their area or shops that don't carry certain brand of bikes. Also, most bike commuters are very savvy when it comes to assembling, repairing and maintaining our bikes, it is not difficult and we save quite a bit of money in doing it.

You're much better off not buying direct from any of these companies and instead buying a bike through your local bike shop. A professional assembly of your new bike is included in the price and any shop worth their salt will also offer, at the least, at least one free tune up, typically within the first year of your purchase. Buying a bike at your LBS will also, in most cases, allow you to take test rides on various bike and help ensure that the bike you're buying is really the bike you want and also that the size you're buying is the right size for you. Finally, supporting your LBS by buying a bike through them instead of buying direct online helps to ensure that your LBS can stay in business so that when you do need that spare part or that repair service, you have somewhere you can go.
