This weekend our daughter’s school hosted their annual pancake breakfast. What’s cool is that for the past few years that we’ve been going to this event, my wife, kids and I would normally ride our bikes there. But what’s sad is that there are way too many parents that drive their kids to school every day as well as to this event. I say that it’s sad because most of these families live no further than 2 miles from the school. I’ve seen one parent who is literally 100 yards away from the school but I’ll often see them getting in their Nissan Armada, (an SUV that gets about 12-15mpg) then driving to the school…ah I just don’t get it.
Back to the pancake breakfast. So we got there and fortunately there were a few families that actually rode bikes, cool! But if you check out the parking lot, as usual, bicyclists are minorities.

Here’s something that was kinda funny…check out the lock job on this. The dude’s wife had asked him if he should redo the way he locked the bikes to better protect them and all he said was…”eh, it should be fine…”

At least they have bike racks…the schools I went to all took them out a few years ago…something about liability

Sad but not surprising.
Some animals prefer to live free, but some actually like living in the zoo. I guess they find comfort and security on the inside of that cage. And if there are enough amenities, they don’t even feel imprisoned.
My wife seems to be one of them. We live about 1/2 – 3/4 mile from school. But, she would rather drive than walk or ride a bike with the kids.
It is Bike to School week in England.

How’s this for a messed-up story of kids WANTING to bike to school, but their principal is an idiot:

Here’s a quick write-up of an event near Cleveland that had fantastic student cycling participation:

I’ve stopped getting mad at these obese people with their SUV’s, and started just quietly chaining my bike up to the rack and watching their expressions of “my my, he cant afford a car” go to “my my what a trim 6-Pack he has.” hahaha! Victory over Gas Guzzlers!
The look on their face is priceless. Last Thursday I picked up my 7 yr old on our tandem and you had to see the reaction that we got from teachers, students and parents. I’m officially the weird Dad that rides a bike for purposes other than recreation.
