Kids transporter: Pak Max Duo

May 7th, 2008 by Moe · 10 Comments

Check out this bike from BucketBike.com. I’m looking for something like this to take my kids to school since they will be going to the same school next year. Bucket Bikes will be at the Urban Commuter expo in Pasadena, we will make sure that we swing by and get more info on their line of bikes.

I think the URL is BucketBike.com (no s at the end, that goes to an Aussie site). Cool stuff though!

Fixed it, thanks for the heads up!

Saw an interesting article about the 1 of ~1700 people in Alabama who bike to work, who picks his child up from school on a tandem bike built for him and kid. Here is the tree hugger link: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/05/father-takes-bike-to-work.php
Thought it might be a nice segue from the review of the bike above built for adult and youngins.

So, is that shiny metal cylinder just in front of the first passenger the “bucket” in “BucketBike”? Their site is woefully sparse on information and specs of the individual models.

Perhaps that “bucket” is a way to carry a bouquet of flowers to your wife or girlfriend?

Or if the kid gets ‘bike sick’?

Ha ha…so you DID get my email!

I wish that site had more information…those bikes look awesome, but it is hard to make a decision based purely on a bad photograph.

Well, like I mentioned, they will be at the Urban Commuter Expo so we will try to get some more info then. I’m really hoping that they will take one to display, who knows, I may bring one home…

If you follow the link to De Fietsfabriek, there is much more information. The upshot is that in the Netherlands and Denmark, there are many companies making bikes of this type. In this country, the Dutch Bike Company of America has been importing Van Andel bakfietsen (bikes with boxes) for several years, as well as Azor city and cargo bikes. Now we have Bucket bike (another reference to the boxes, I’ll bet) which appears to be importing from De fietsfabriek, which is a competing company that does a lot more with longtail kid bikes and other fun stuff. If you look hard enough, you will see that they actually offer an off the shelf tallbike! I think it’s great to get some variety and competition in this category of bike here in the states. The more, the better, for sure.

Val, where would we be without you? That “link” to Fietsfabriek was pretty well hidden.

The tallbike is actually a “replica” Pedersen bike…similar, I suppose, to the tallbikes of freak-biking culture, but preceding them by many years. Here’s more information on them:

The bucket is for carrying your heavy lock and chain in (yes really) However I have seen pictures of them used for umbrellas, champagne etc. Some have even suggest it would make a handy barf bucket for the kid… LOL
