Normally, I prefer to wear a beard, but it really gets too much while I'm hot, i.e. while I'm riding. The trouble is that I can't wipe away the sweat.

So I've gotten into the habit of shaving my beard every spring in honor of the biking season, and letting it grow back after my last recreational ride of the year. (I still commute during the winter, but I don't get hot, so beard is OK.)

I'm one of those shaved-head full-beard guys. I can recommend it. The shaved head helps keep cool in warm weather; throw on a fleece beanie and the beard acts like a natural balaclava in cold weather.

I do get "helmet beard", though. That's a touch annoying.

I thought geologists had beards so they could carry extra mineral samples in them! It's more than a fashion accessory...

Helmet hair? Wear a hat or take a comb!
How come bowler/top hats aren't fashionable anymore?
And anyway, what's wrong with helmet hair? I am predicting right now that with this "green" movement sweeping every industry, having hair that looks like you rode your bike will be IN!
Nobody worries about driver-gut, why worry about helmet hair?

I've had a full beard for about a decade, and I commute on the bike. I don't seem to have a problem picking up chicks, but my wife does get a little irritated when we are out ;)
My beard is almost a requirement for my profession though, it seems that about 75% of geologists wear a beard (its 'cause we are smart free spirited types, just like bike commuters).

$2 (due to inflation)

Novi, Michigan here.

Someone mentioned head shaving. I also shave my head. Doing so makes commuting by bike so much easier, but what to do with your hair is a big obstacle with most of the folks I know. Any tips out there on avoiding helmet hair? So I can pass it on to my comrades.

lol. Yep. It was the facial hair. The mustache and the beard just didn't do it for me . Some guys can get away with it - it doesn't work for RL though. I don't mind a goatee though...goatees are hot.

lots of michiganders .... i moved here last summer from ann arbor. :)

and i don't have a beard. (i do, however, have two x-chromosomes, so i'd be frightened for my little hormones should a beard ever sprout up.)
