Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico(Monday June-2-2008) Seven competitors from yesterday cyclist race were severely injured after being hit by a drunk driver, one of them died and other three were hospitalized. The drunk driver was arrested after the rest of the participants tried to lynch him.
30 year old Alejandro Alvarez, from Brownsville,Texas, was pronounced dead on the scene, while Alejandro Salvador Tamez, 18, Juan Machaita, 38, and Guadalupe Martinez,, 16, were severely injured.
Cyclists were participating in a race from Matamoros to Bagdad Beach, when drunk driver Jesse Campos, a Brownsville, Texas resident, in his Ford Grand Marquis, license 659-FKF from Texas, impacted seven cyclists, even as they were being escorted by Local Transit Officials.

Oh. My. God. That photo makes me sick to my stomach.
My heart goes out to the riders and their families. I hope that drunk driver gets a long time in a very painful place…
Exactly what I was coming here to say. Wow. That’s beyond horrific. Speedy healing to the injured and condolences to those who have suffered loss from this completely unnecessary disaster.

The drunk driver also tried to flee the scene, he was lucky that he was put inside the patrol car, otherwise his dumb ass would be dead as well.
Part of me wishes that the cops would have “done some paperwork” for a couple minutes to allow the cyclists to “vent”.

Good thing their ‘escort’ vehicle got out of the way. (at least from the looks of the photo) Would have been better to take the head on in the patrol car with the safety belts and airbags than to dodge and let the cyclists take the brunt of the collision.
Sad.
God, that looks awful. Just awful.
Why is the title “Horrific Accident…”? This is no accident–This is a crash with a clear cause. Accidents are unavoidable incidents. The sooner we start calling these things what they are the sooner we can take action to prevent them.

Mike: It looks more like the Cops were trailing the pack to make sure they weren’t harried from behind, and when they saw what was happening swerved to be sure they didn’t smash the bikes in a two car vise.
Holy crap… start cuing the nightmares.

We talk a lot about educating the general driving public but how do you educate the inebriated public? Truly tragic!
There can be no excuse for plowing into these cyclist…the laws are much to easy with motorist that injure and kill. This driver should not have been on the road! I can only pray they lock this jerk in some Mexican jail to rot. The fact he may be an american does not change anything!!

A drunk “driver” getting behind the wheel is NO ACCIDENT!! It is a selfish deliberate decision that has killed one more cyclist, in this case, out of hundreds in the USA alone over the years. This could easily of happened in the USA, as tolerance for drunk driving continues. So let’s quit calling cyclists being run down by drunks “accidents” and call them what crime they are- manslaughter!
Let me start of by saying that this was an awful accident. The pictures don’t even begin to describe what this looked like in person, all those injured people. My heart goes out to everyone involved in this accident. And another thing, when they took the bastard to jail, he admitted that besides being drunk, he had done cocaine also.
