From South Dakota, another bike commuter that works in IT, (I’m starting to think that IT people really like to ride their bike to work!), here’s Kevin Brady‘s short and sweet bike commuter profile:

How long have you been a bike commuter?
For the better part of 10 years.
Why did you start riding your bike to work and how long is your commute?
10-11 years ago. It’s a whopping .92 miles if I cut through the park

How does Bike Commuting help you with your lifestyle (economics, health, relationships)?
Made it possible for me to sell one of our two cars. One Car for a five person family. I have burley flatbed that I put a 19 Gallon Rubbermaid on to go run errands.
What do you do for a living and in what city do you bike commute?
I work for the IT Department the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD
What kind(s) of bike do you have?
Specialized Stumpjumper (commuter for now), Giant ATX 990, Giant TCR0 (road), Cannondale Road Tandem, Cruiser tandem.

Any funny or interesting commuting story that you may want to share?
People quit asking me why I bike everyday when I started asking them why they drove.
What do people (coworkers, friends) say when you tell them that you are a bike commuter?
Most think it’s awesome. Some think I’m nuts, especially in the winter. They don’t when I park right outside the door when they are hunting for a parking spot or parking 4-5 blocks away.
How about bicycling advocacy? Are you active in any local or regional advocacy groups?
VERY active in advocacy. I’ve been very involved in the beginning of the newly formed South Dakota Bicycle Coalition. I’ve been a big proponent of helmet safety and riding safely and getting others to respect the rules of the road to keep a good rapport with cagers.
Anything else that you want to share with us?
There is very little I don’t do on my bike. Most people don’t think twice about jumping in their car to go somewhere, I don’t think twice about jumping on my bike. Living in a town of 10,000 people, navigation by bike makes more sense.
Big thanks to Kevin for sharing his story and pictures. Kevin also has his own blog, check it out: http://bikingbrady.blogspot.com/

hey bike commuters – i think you have some weird photo crunching stuff happening with the blog. seems many of the bikes you post have elliptical wheels… and people and objects looked crunched up. you might want to check how your blog software is importing images. seems that it is smashing things down to fit it into the space you allow.
keep up the good blogging!

I just got a Trail-a-bike for my 4 /12 yr old son and he hated it. We got about 50 yards max and he was balling. My heart sunk. He’s a rather timid little guy—until he sees his girl cousin doing something and having fun. So we gotta work on that. With patience he’ll come around.
I love that crazy mule train you got going with the bike, trailer bike, and trailer.
My son hated the Trail-a-bike too. He was terrified of the starting-off sway and wobble. One of the things that convinced me I needed to get an Xtracycle immediately!
I do want an Xtra, but unless I score the jackpot like Moe it’s not in the budget right now.
Great to see Biking Brady getting some publicity!
My son (5 1/2) loves the trail-a-bike… we started using it last year and it’s been great, letting us spend more time (and do more errands) on the bike instead of in a car.
