RE: bike racks. Find HR, and make some noise. If you can get others to join you in making noise, even better. This worked with my employer.

Yay! More RNs -- that's great! Maybe it's NOT just IT/Tech types out there commuting!!!

Someone ought to talk to that hospital about bike racks -- and who knows? If a rack was installed, perhaps more than just one person would use it.

My wife works at cardiac step down unit. she sarted bike commuting two months ago. As far as we can tell she is the only bike commuter in the hospital! No bike racks and no incentives at this 377 bed hospital (www.wellmont.org).

I don't mind a soft rain. Even a hard rain isn't too bad if I'm just cruising for fun. What I hate is when it stops raining.

Last Saturday, we got a short, hard rain in the late afternoon. The temperature went from 91 to 78 in under 15 minutes. Awesome. Then the sun came back out and there was steam rising from the roads. On some small side streets, it looked like a tropical rain forest. The humidity went from a soul-sucking 80% to a seventh ring of hell 100%. Brutal and totally unenjoyable.

Portland: Mecca.

My sister-in-law just moved to Portland with her soon-to-be fourth husband. She doesn't even own a bicycle. I hate her for moving to a place I want to live and then her spitting on the very essence of what makes the city great.

Sometimes I actually can prefer a good steady shower. Doing the MS150 a couple years back the first day was a rather hot and cloudless day. My allergies were going haywire all day and the heat was rough. The second day we had a constant steady rain. I didn't overheat at all and pollen aint a problem when it's raining.

Yeah, the hardest thing for non-cyclists to comprehend is biking in the rain. I don't get it -- it's water. It hurts the bike more than it hurts me.

Cardiac nurse "in da house"!!! Sweet -- my wife worked for years on a cardiac floor. Now she does something called "adult stepdown"...ventilated patients and folks who are never leaving the hospital. She's a dedicated bike commuter, too.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!!!
