Mike: When I was 16, I was riding a bike, and had decided that motor vehicles were for chumps - way too expensive, way too dangerous, and usually unnecessary. It took a lot ot thought and soul searching, inspired somewhat by the aftermath of a freind's death in a car crach, but I stuck with that decision; when I moved away from home and went to college, I specifically told my parents that I did not want to own a car. Now I do, but that's another story.

I'm single and in my 40s, women haven't outgrown that "Boy needs car..." crap. Even recently dated a woman who loves to bike, owns a minivan, and was making fun of past relationships with guys who didn't own a car... right in front of me. I don't own a car and dumped her soon after that!

There needs to be a follow up, a few years later:

He's gained a bunch of weight, he's stuck in traffic, the car still doesn't run all that well, and he's paying $4 a gallon for gas on top of insurance and the still steady flow of repairs the car continues to require.

To his right, a bicyclist passes him, and all the other traffic, and he starts to remember why the bike was so great in the first place.

As I mentined over at Copenhagenize ( http://www.copenhagenize.com/ ), the message that I choose to take away from this ad is that if you're going to use a car, you'll need a bike for backup. I always try to carry one on the increasingly rare occasions when I drive.

I thought it was kinda funny. Besides, I go to the auto parts store a lot but I don't stop bike commuting. (I bought parts to fix up our second car and then we sold it).

Let's see, if it took the kid all summer to fix that jalopy, how much money did he spend? How did he get the title to the car? I bet if he shows up at the car owner's house to claim it, the owner will say, "Hey, thanks for fixing my car, now hand over the keys and beat it."
