I picked up my commuter backpack in mid-August of 2008. Voluminous is a good word, but a better word would be CAVERNOUS! After using it for a few weeks, the only issues I had were along the lines of no key ring clip, too many pen/pencil holder slots and no velcro closure on the U-lock pocket. Some minor thread removal and I now have a new slot that fits my light rail tickets perfectly.
As of for personalization, I only have a Bike Denver glow-in-the-dark sticker on the flap and a rear flasher. Other items were panned by my wife with the comment, “Would you want our 6 year old daughter to ask what that means….” Uh, maybe not.
Heh, I love the bag, Moe! I think those stickers are quite hilarious. When people ask me why I bike I tell them it’s because “I hate my car.” I can’t wait for my first cargo bike so I put such pithy statements on my vehicle. (Big sweaty dudes on the coast avoid backpacks!)
Hey Moe- How durable is that removable liner? I’m seriously thinking about ordering one to use for school. But my Psych book is new, heavy, and has sharp corners…
RL,
Appreciate the testamonial. Looks like I’ll have my LBS order me one (the new, bigger one).
The newer liners are clear and have a clearly visible scrim and they are (slightly) stronger than the original white liners — some of which had a tendency to tear. Sometimes from abuse, sometimes they did fail. We gladly replaced any failed ones at no cost and we keep a couple hundred in stock as replacements for this purpose – not that we’ve come even remotely close to replacing that many. I’ve torn a few shoving a 12er of Pils Urquell in the bag – but never with my laptop or other stuff.
The exterior of the bag is design to handle the abrasion. And the beauty is, if in a couple of years, you need a new liner, you just e-mail us and we hook you up for $10 or so — which is much less than replacing the whole bag.
Hi. I have been trying to decide whether I should buy pannier bags for my daily commute/occasional cycling adventure or a backpack like this one. I currently just carry a school type backpack and I don’t like it so much because it gets hot on my back, and can throw me off sometimes…is it the same for these? I noticed that banjo bros offer nice pannier style bags too…so I’ll most likely go with them either way.
@Metalchef87
I will take the waterproof panniers any day over a backpack.
They stay lower and hold a lot more. Moreover, keeping my back free helps me to turn back and look for traffic easier.
Thanks Moe and Shek! I will be ordering my panniers from banjo brothers soon, but I don’t know what to get…maybe just one waterproof, or maybe one market IDK.
