A carfree Long Beach….at least for a few hours

Posted by Russ Roca On October - 12 - 2008

Once a year, the city of Long Beach shuts down some of its major streets to automobile traffic and pedestrians (of the marathon running variety) and bicyclists take over for the Long Beach Marathon. For the last few years I’ve ridden (officially and unofficially) in the bike tour.

It’s not a race and there are no winners. They do give a medal at the end for those who registered.

When I have ridden it was really never to go fast or beat a personal best, but to just ride in MY city (if only for a few magical hours) without having to worry about cars at all.

It’s a beautiful thing and lets me glimpse at what bike heaven must be like.

Is that a HEADLIGHT on that vintage cruiser?!? Holy crap!

The other one looks like a Schwinn Cycletruck. Both are extremely nice.

    Ciclovia FTW!!!
