Alex Wetmore is on my short list of interesting bike reads on the internet. He has great posts about his forays in rack building and documents the cool modifications to his bikes.

Very cool bike. I like that he used existing frame and parts. But I would of looked for a different frame that didnt use a U-Brake.
I’m a huge Alex Wetmore fan…that guy really IS “always up to something”. I would love to live in his basement shop…filled with amazing machine tools and handmade jigs for building some really wonderful contraptions.
@Clancy, I didn’t entirely understand it on Alex’s blog, but I think the U-brake posts and brake itself are only used for a parking brake (actuated by a shifter). A regular pair of V-brakes do the actual braking duties.
I see that now. I guess I only saw the UBrake the first time. A parking brake is a great idea for a cargo bike. I wonder if he has some kind of kickstand/centerstand in the works.
A kickstand would be very useful. I bought a 2-legged one for it, but having it near the rear isn’t ideal. The bike really needs a front stand since the load is up front.
I’m already thinking about designs for v2.
The U-brake is only for the parking brake. There are V-brake studs for the main rear brake. I thought about removing the U-brake studs, but then came up with this alternative use. The parking brake is very useful for loading up the bike when it is leaning against something.
