In Dayton, OH we kick off our third annual Drive Less, Live More Campaign. This is a broad effort to get folks out of their single-occupant-vehicles and into a carpool, or transit or on a bike. www.drivelesslivemore.org.

Boise has a full schedule of events for next week.
http://www.boisebikeweek.org/2009schedule

Starts with a Utility bike show sponsored by Madsen bikes on Sunday and ends Saturday with a bike parade. I am entering a bike in the Frankenbike buildoff. "Swing 16" http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o192/conion1/CIMG1349.jpg

Clearwater (Florida) just held their first-ever Ciclovia on April 26th, and yes, they are talking about maybe doing it again, after we get through summer and back to cool weather this fall. (Summer is our rainy season.) For many of us that post to this site, every month is bicycle month- we just need to convince the rest of the people around us.

Not sure if this would be considered fun...

The National Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority is encouraging bike commuting amongst its staff, tenants and the community. A bike commuting safety meeting that is open to the public will be held on May 11, 2009 at noon at the Gateway Conference Room on the island of Hawaii in Kailua-Kona.

The idea of having a bike safety meeting was seeded into my brain while I was attending a cycling friendly communities presentation a few months ago by the League of American Bicyclists presenter (Preston sp?). So… I have teamed up with a local pedestrian and cycling advocacy group “PATH” and their Education Director who is a League of American Bicyclists certified cycling instructor to teach a one hour Bicycle Commuting Brown Bag Safety Meeting during Bike to Work Week. We are also surveying the facility to discover how many people are currently bike commuting and how many people would like to try it. So far we have 10 confirmed bike commuters of 300 people at our facility. We may set up a spreadsheet giving potential locations with distances, calories burned and gas savings as a hybrid transport option to park and bicycle if the distances are too great or too steep to start from your home.

I’m hoping that this safety meeting will help cyclist and non-cyclist learn the rules of the road, to be more defensive behind the steering wheel and/or handle bar and to discuss safety issues that are relevant to our roadways. I also convinced my executive director to make the meeting public, as an outreach program to the community. All are welcome! Here is a downloadable memo and flyer: http://www.ophale.com/bicycle/NELHA_Bike_to_Work_Safety_Meeting.pdf

Aloha,

Keith

1) Climate Cycle Bikeathon May 9th
2) Ride of Silence May 20th
3) Bike the Drive May 24th
Come out and ride!
