Hey has anybody ever test-ridden one of these? I keep going to the website and getting interested, but then I wuss out. Is the weight penalty huge? Does it ride as rigid as a normal bike? Are there sacrifices made to the riding position? Would it make a good commuter?
So yeah…chime in if you know, and in the meantime, perhaps I’ll try to win it…since, you know…free.
Kevin,
This bike is currently sitting in my garage and I’ve had some saddle time with it. It’s a nice riding bike, the weight wasn’t too much of a factor. I know that if you want to use it as a commuter, all you’d really need would be slicks.
Geometry of the bike is just like a regular non-folding bike.
I’ve seen many Swiss and Montague bikes as commuter bikes. In fact, there was a guy on my route who had the Hummer version of the Swiss.
Kevin, check out the following review of the Montague “Paratrooper”, which is nearly the same machine:

Here’s my first impression of the bike:

unfortunately I was laid-off and I was not able to do a full blown review. All I can say is that this bike will make a very nice singlespeed folding bike.
Bah, looks like I missed the contest. I’ve been commuting on a Montague Paratrooper for the last few years and thought I might get a second one free…guess not.
The geometry is very solid and weight is not really an issue on the commute. If it’s anything like my Paratrooper the bb is stiff and there is no slop or flex in the frame when riding, which really gives it very good power transfer for a folding bike (or non-folding bike for that matter). If you are going to be commuting too, I would throw some slick and fenders on and go for it.
Moe, I think the bike would have made a cool ss.
