Posted by RL Policar On August - 24 - 2009

I posted this on MtnBikeRiders.com. But I figured I could share it here since its pretty much a tip that commuters could use.

Funny — I’d read about that trick for years but have never seen it in action (I don’t have a compressor). It works even better than I thought it would.

Now, to get Santa to bring me a compressor and hose…

    That’s even better than Windex…

I just posted the how to on installing grips with compressed air on http://www.MtnBikeRiders.com

Since I have no easy access to compressed air I’ve used the simple act of loosening the brake levers just enough so they’ll slide on the bars easily and using them to push the grips off the bars.

Naah I just loosen the allen screws on my lock-ons. :D

Nice trick. Will it work if the grips were cut to allow bar ends? What about if the bike uses grip shifts?

  7. Raiyn says:

    @ Guy,
Yes it’ll work just fine. You might have to vary your approach (Like go in from the end instead of the center of the bars). The main thing you’re looking to do is get air under the grip.

One thing I’ve noted on grips like the one in the video where the end is enclosed by the grip is that there’s normally a small hole Now provided that a rubber or plastic plug was inserted in the bar prior to installing the grips (doesn’t always happen unfortunately, I feel its a good safety feature to have) all you need to do is apply the air gun at the hole.

I love this trick, my dad taught it to me when I was a kid and constantly having to replace grips on my BMX bike.

I’ve used canned air (the kind you use to dust computer stuff) for that trick, when a compressor and nozzle is not available.
