Safety Recall: Klean Kanteen Sport Cap 2.0

Many of you use the Klean Kanteen stainless steel waterbottles…so we wanted to let you know about a safety recall for their “Sports Cap 2.0” announced by the company.

    Just to put it out there because I’ve backed this product for some time now: This is an issue with the hardness of the plastic used in the nozzle and not a design / function issue.

    I hate to admit this, but I gave up on waiting for a replacement from the people Klean Kanteen has running their recall.

    I’ve tried to make contact with KK about the issue and never got a response other than the return kit. (Which, by the way, included a insanely huge plastic bubble mailer. FOR ONE CAP!) My cap was sent to the 3rd party company on the 14th of last month.

    With no information as to when I’d get my replacement I went ahead and ordered the new cap (version 2.1?) off eBay back on the first and it arrived yesterday.

    I received the following email about 2 hours ago:

    Hello XXXXXX,

    Thanks for your interest and support of Klean Kanteen! *The CPSC requires that we collect the recalled goods before replacing them. You definitely hit the nail on the head when you said that our “intermediary has dropped the ball.” We are paying the cost of shipping to and from and for the replacement cap. We apologize for what seems excessive packaging, as our goal is to lower our carbon footprint. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

    Being a small family-owned and operated business from Northern California we were faced with a difficult task in dealing with this recall. We realize that we could not directly accommodate such a large scale exchange program, so we teamed up with a third-party company, Stericycle.

    Stericycle is a recall service that specializes in recycling consumer products so we felt they would be a good fit for our voluntary exchange. They are currently receiving thousands of caps back every day and with 1.5 million or more caps on the market, getting replacements has been taking more time than they originally estimated. Stericycle is receiving, processing the returns, and repackaging replacements as quickly as possible. Unfortunately at this time, Stericycle is quoting us a turn-around time of 14-24 business days.

    I checked with Stericycle, and their records show that your cap is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow, 7.8.10. Your UPS tracking # is: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. We apologize for the delays and inconvenience associated with this recall. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We hope you continue to enjoy your Kanteen for years to come!

    Needless to say I’m a bit disappointed that it took them a week to reply to my email, but hopefully this information will help someone else. I still love my bottle and I’ve never lost intrest or faith in Klean Kanteen as a company – my issue apparently lies with the 3rd party recycler.
