The business of bicycling

I stumbled across the following essay series a few months ago, but forgot to share it with you. It’s from the website Triple Pundit, and is a collection of articles sponsored by People for Bikes. Click here to visit the Triple Pundit page.

All of the articles in the collection are thought-provoking and worth a read. The one in particular, though, that caught my eye was this one:

If you own a business and want to encourage your employees to use a bicycle to get to and from work, there’s an excellent article right here to help.

Even if you’re not in a position to call the shots at your company, some of the tips and tools in that article may come in handy…even if only to encourage your coworkers to join you on two wheels. And, if you can bend the ear of a sympathetic owner/manager, who knows…you might just be the person who gets to implement a bike-commuting incentive program for your company!

Employer says you can’t ride to work?

I stumbled across the following in my daily bike newsfeed… presenting KC metro area motivational speaker and bicycle commuter Corinna West with a lengthy and well-researched essay entitled “How to overcome your employer bicycle commuting objections“.

Such a thing has never happened to me, and I hope it never happens to you…but I can see how some employers, fueled by a well-meaning but misguided sense of concern for an employee’s safety or the fear of liability, could try to put the kibosh on two-wheeled transportation to and from the workplace. If such a thing happens, Ms. West’s article provides the ammo and gentle persuasions to help overcome the situation. Take a look at it by clicking here.

We’ve recently discussed whether bike commuting can seem unprofessional, and this issue sort of goes hand in hand with that — one of many potential hurdles a bike commuter may have to face when choosing two wheels over four.

We’d love to hear if any of you out there in reader-land have faced such challenges…please leave your stories, comments and thoughts below.

Florida Bike Month…Just Days Away!

As many of you may know, Florida celebrates Bike Month in March rather than May like the rest of the country.

To kick things off, the folks at Tampa BayCycle have (finally!) announced a schedule of events taking place in March. Here are some of the highlights:

–Tuesday 3/2 Free tickets to Lightning game for those arriving via bicycle, sponsored by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

–Thursday 3/4 Street Skills workshop (brown bag, 12 – 1pm), sponsored by Sprinkle Consulting, RSVP to Karen Kress .

–Friday 3/5, 3/26 Bike to Work Day — Join experienced cyclists coming downtown from all directions with a morning meet up at Indigo Coffee.

Words for Wheels free bike giveaway contest opens (due 3/22).

–Log your miles to compete in the Commuter Challenge.

–Discounts at CityBike Tampa when you mention “Tampa BayCycle” (varies each week).

–The Downtown YMCA is even offering free use of the locker room for cyclists throughout the month. And don’t forget our 2nd annual Tampa Twilight Criterium and ECO.Festival on 3/27.

Hope to see some of you out there during Bike Month and at some of these events. With luck, I’m going to try to cover the Twilight Criterium like I did last year.
