Florida Bike Month is Almost Here!

We here in Florida like to kick things off a bit early…while most of the rest of the nation celebrates National Bike Month in May, we go our own way and do things in March.

For folks in the Tampa Bay area, the Tampa Downtown Partnership and the New North Transportation Alliance have compiled a list of activities for the end of February, all of March and into May itself. Take a look:

There are a lot of good events to choose from, and I’ll report on more as they are announced. There are some upcoming group “ride to work” rides, and once I locate the map and details I’ll share them with you. Also, I hope to attend a number of these events as time allows, and I’ll be sure to carry my camera along to record the details. Stay tuned!

Racing Hits the Streets of Downtown Tampa

Many of us here are fans of bicycle racing…heck, we even sponsor a racing team (Mtnbikeriders.com Team — home of champions)!

So, I was very excited to head to downtown Tampa yesterday to catch the 2nd annual Tampa Twilight Criterium. This was a day-long event, combining 10 individual racing categories and several special events for families and local celebrities. We were able to spend a couple hours there and caught the 35+ Men and Women’s 1/2/3/4 brackets. The racing action was FAST and thrilling!

Coupled with the races was the ECO.lution Festival in the Lykes Gaslight Park and surrounding streets. The entire area was bustling with festival-goers, racers and spectators and was a beautiful day for families to enjoy all that downtown Tampa has to offer. Here’s a shot of “tent city”:

festival

The festival was sort of a who’s who in local cycling endeavors…SWFBUD member shops, the Tampa BayCycle folks, the Tampa Bay Bike Co-op and many others were in attendance. I couldn’t walk 10 steps without running into another cycling friend or local celebrity here!

City Bike Tampa and Tampa BayCycle also offered free bike valet parking…and the corrals were packed this year:

Here are some shots of the races…men’s 35+ in the first two and women’s 1/2/3/4 in the last two:

(note to self…I have GOT to get a better camera!)

As we walked away from the event, we discovered that the City of Tampa even blocked off a section of street for bike polo, something I’ve known about around here but never seen in person. It was pretty cool to watch, and my kids loved the wheel covers and the players’ bike-handling skills:

This event is an exciting addition to Florida Bicycle Month, and we’re very happy that the Tampa Downtown Partnership helps get this race brought to us here…downtown is a fantastic place to hold a criterium, and we hope this becomes an annual tradition. In fact, I’ve spent the last few hours trying to convince some friends that we need to field a team for next year’s event. Anyone feel like sponsoring a couple of 35+ has-beens?

Florida Bike Month…Just Days Away!

As many of you may know, Florida celebrates Bike Month in March rather than May like the rest of the country.

To kick things off, the folks at Tampa BayCycle have (finally!) announced a schedule of events taking place in March. Here are some of the highlights:

–Tuesday 3/2 Free tickets to Lightning game for those arriving via bicycle, sponsored by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

–Thursday 3/4 Street Skills workshop (brown bag, 12 – 1pm), sponsored by Sprinkle Consulting, RSVP to Karen Kress .

–Friday 3/5, 3/26 Bike to Work Day — Join experienced cyclists coming downtown from all directions with a morning meet up at Indigo Coffee.

Words for Wheels free bike giveaway contest opens (due 3/22).

–Log your miles to compete in the Commuter Challenge.

–Discounts at CityBike Tampa when you mention “Tampa BayCycle” (varies each week).

–The Downtown YMCA is even offering free use of the locker room for cyclists throughout the month. And don’t forget our 2nd annual Tampa Twilight Criterium and ECO.Festival on 3/27.

Hope to see some of you out there during Bike Month and at some of these events. With luck, I’m going to try to cover the Twilight Criterium like I did last year.

Bike To Work Day Events in Downtown Tampa

Florida may have celebrated Bike Month back in March, but the events for Bike to Work Week keep coming. From our friends at the Tampa Downtown Partnership:

Downtown Tampa will be celebrating National Bike to Work Day on May 15 with group rides coming in from literally all directions. Participants will meet up afterwards at Indigo Coffee for a free beverage. The Downtown YMCA is offering free showers and the Partnership can supply a bike helmet if requested in advance. See which route is best for you then just show up at the appointed time or contact Karen Kress at (813) 221-3686 or www.tampasdowntown.com (What’s Hot section) for more information. Most routes can also serve as a park and ride if needed. Come join us!

A PDF flyer illustrating Bike to Work Day routes can be found by clicking here.

For the fifth year in a row, I’m not working on Bike to Work Day…but I’ll probably still find a way to ride my bike. For the rest of you, have fun and be safe out there!
