Urban Commuter Expo Part Deux

The Urban Commuter Expo was a great success on many levels. There were so many people who showed up despite the record-breaking heat. Moe and I were joined by friend and loyal reader Ben “Buns of Steel” Castaneda (BenC). We arrived at the venue early enough to set up our booth. We had prime real estate since we were right at the entrance.

We brought about 3 bikes to display, The KHS Flight 100(review in process), the Swobo Folsom and the Ibex/Xtracycle. The bikes help in getting attention from people. The biggest eye catcher would be the most obvious, the Xtracycle. Everyone seems to love it and I met so many people that just had so many questions about it as well as wanting to ride it. Of course, I accommodated them by allowing them to test ride it.

KHS Bicycles really came through for us this year. Not only did they provide us the Manhattan Green for the Bike To Work Day in Long Beach, but they also supplied us countless swag that included KHS Shirts, water bottles and hats. was very generous too. They sent us a bunch of commuter gear from their Sette lineup to raffle off such as messenger bags, gloves, and pumps.

We also had plenty of Bumble Bars that we passed out. Man people loved those! I had one volunteer who came back 4 different times asking for more bars. Then another volunteer came back 3 times just because she loved how they tasted. Chocolate is my favorite!

One of the more popular items we had was the Citra Wipes. As you may remember we did a review on this item and it totally rocks. As I gave them away to people, and explained what they are, people were so happy to get it because all of them have had some sort of mechanical breakdown at one time or another where it left them with some dirty fingers. Over and over again, people kept telling…”This is a great idea!” It really is…

Here I am explaining how the Citra Wipes work.

As we made our way around the booths we met so many people. One of my favorite is Totally Tubular. They take old tires and tubes and make them into something useful such as wallets, purses and bags. The items they had were priced reasonably well, all ranged from $5 to $20. But I think the bigger bags were a bit more. I asked them if they used those industrial sized sewing machines and they said yes. It took them a long time to get down the process of making bags because they kept breaking needles trying to sew tires and tubes. I also asked how they got rid of the rubber smell…ready for this……washing machine.

Sweetskinz also sent us a few sets of tires to donate to the raffle. Here’s the raffle table. You could win any or all of this stuff just by purchasing a raffle ticket. They ended up raising quite a bit of money from the ticket sales, I can’t recall the exact number though.

Another interesting item we saw was this bike trailer that was made to look like an old tear drop “Airstream” trailer.

Moe and I enjoying the event…

I was trying to blog LIVE on location, but the free City of Pasadena WIFI was kinda weak. So I didn’t even bother…Oh that’s Ben showing off his Buns of Steel.

New comer to the LA Bike Scene is Bucket Bike. We briefly spoke with Yanni about the Bucket Bike and we actually have a video of it to show later. But for now, here’s some pics.

Here’s the shifter…on the seat tube.

A Bakfiets was also there on display.

That’s it for now. Moe and I will be back later to report more about the event. Stay tuned!

Product Review: Zogics Citra Wipes

The folks of Zogics sent us some Citra Wipes to review.

Here’s some info about the wipes:

citra wipes

CitraWipes are portable, non-toxic degreaser hand wipes with natural citrus oil extracts for removing tough grease and grime.

CitraWipes have a pleasant mild citrus scent and are enriched with aloe vera and lanolin. These handy wipes are self-drying and require no water for use.

CitraWipes are individually packaged in 2.5 x 4 heavy-duty foil pouches that can be conveniently kept wherever life’s adventures might get dirty: bicycles, motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs, boats, cars, toolboxes, and much more!

CitraWipes retail $2.49 per two-pack. You can purchase FOUR (4) two-twin here for $9.96 (for a total of EIGHT individually packaged wipes).

CitraWipes are made in the USA, and like all products offered by Zogics, a portion of their sales is donated to environmental organizations.

To review these wipes I tried to look at my dirtiest chain, but since I’m pretty anal about cleaning my chains on a weekly basis…yes I do…I couldn’t really find one that was super filthy. So I used the next best thing….Bearing Grease.

I made sure I spread the grease all over my hands.

I then opened up a packet of the Citra Wipes and used one towelette to clean off my hands.

After thoroughly cleaning my hands, the grease came off. My hands were clean and they smelled great!

I work on bikes ALL the time, and I can’t stand the smell of grease. Its a mix between fresh tar, some petroleum product and B.O. I do like how the Citra Wipes work and how they get your hands clean and smelling great. I didn’t even need water. With that said, and with the pictures showing you how well this works, then I can confidently recommend the Zogics Citra Wipes. Since they come in individual packets, I’d recommend you keep on in your pannier, or your seat/tool bag just in case you have a mechanical while riding.
